Most garage floors are neglected concrete — pitted, stained, and cracked from years of oil drips and freeze-thaw cycles. This Columbia homeowner wanted the opposite: a floor so good-looking that the garage itself becomes a feature of the house. Metallic epoxy delivers exactly that. The floor system uses metallic pigments suspended in a clear epoxy resin that create a three-dimensional, flowing effect as the material self-levels and the pigments interact.
Preparation is everything with epoxy. We diamond-ground the entire slab to open the concrete pores and remove a previous failed coating, then repaired cracks and pits with epoxy filler. The base coat — a moisture-vapor barrier — was applied first, followed by the metallic broadcast coat, then a high-build clear coat, and finally a UV-stable topcoat to prevent yellowing. Total system thickness: approximately 30 mils.
The finished floor is seamless, chemical-resistant, and easy to clean — oil, antifreeze, and road salt wipe off with a mop. Under the LED shop lights the homeowner installed, the metallic swirl pattern shifts from silver to bronze depending on the angle of view.
