Color washing is one of the most approachable specialty finishes — and one of the most underrated. The technique layers a thinned glaze over a base coat and manipulates it while wet, creating soft, organic variation that reads as texture even though the wall is perfectly smooth. This Ellicott City bedroom had good bones but flat walls that killed the warmth the homeowners were after.
We selected a dusty sage base paired with a sage-green glaze mixed to about 20% opacity. The glaze was applied in sections and worked with a large, slightly crumpled cloth that creates a soft clouded effect rather than brush marks. Moving the cloth in circular and cross-hatch motions breaks up any pattern and ensures the variation looks completely natural.
The result is a wall that shifts between blue-green and warm gray depending on the light and time of day. Morning light pulls the blue out of the sage; evening lamplight warms it toward sage-gray. The room now feels designed, not just painted.
"We tried to describe what we wanted — 'warm but not heavy, textured but not loud' — and Primus absolutely nailed it. The room is completely transformed."
