Choosing a paint color should be exciting — but for most homeowners, it's one of the most stressful decisions in a renovation. Walk into any paint store and you're faced with thousands of chips, each one looking slightly different under the store's fluorescent lighting than it will on your walls at home. Here's how to approach it with confidence.

Start With the Light

Natural light is the single biggest factor in how a color reads in a room. A north-facing room with indirect light will make warm colors feel muddy and cool colors feel cold. South-facing rooms flood with warm light all day, which can make already-warm colors feel overwhelming. Before you choose a color, observe how the light changes in the room from morning to evening — it's often dramatic.

Understand Undertones

Every "white" or "gray" or "beige" has an undertone — usually pink, green, yellow, or blue — that only becomes visible once it's on your walls. This is why a color that looks perfect on the chip can look completely different at home. Always look at the darkest chip in a color family to read its undertone clearly, then go lighter from there.

Test Before You Commit

Paint a 12"×12" sample directly on the wall — not on cardboard or paper. View it at multiple times of day and under both natural and artificial light. Most paint stores sell sample quarts for around $5. It's the best $5 you'll spend in any renovation.

Match Your Fixed Elements First

Your flooring, countertops, cabinetry, and major furniture pieces aren't changing. Start there and pull color from them. If you have warm wood floors, a cool gray wall will fight them. Bring a fabric swatch or a photo of your floor to the paint store when you're selecting.
